1st try on the whistle

Sorry we didnt get a chance to chase pheasants. Work got busy and I ended up travelling to Quebec a few times within those last 2 weeks.

I started Deke on the whistle today for 'sit' and 'come'. Within 5 minutes he had both figured out! I left the lead on but laid it on the ground (which maybe helped him stay), and reinforced the verbal 'sit' with one quick whistle. I was able to walk at least 30 yds from him and he didn't budge. A few quick toots and he would break and run right to me. By the end of 5 minutes of this he started sitting in the whistle alone. If I haven't said it enough already, thank you for a wonderful dog.

Merry Christmas to you, Pierette, Jill, Puck, and the rest of the family!

Sady curled up after our walk this afternoon

This is where Sady curled up after our walk this afternoon...lol!!! I'm sure she'll only get a couple of weeks out of this cozy spot before she can no longer fit. She actually pushed the vase back so she could get comfy...lol!!!
She is definitely not a fan of the cold!!!

Sady

Hey Don,

Thought I'd send you a few pics of Sady. She's doing really well, and took very little time adjusting to our household. She has an amazing temperament!!! It's very hard for me not to just sit down and cuddle her all day long, but I don't...lol!!! She's doing well in her crate, not that she's in there a lot but it seems enough that she's not uncomfortable in there, and to be honest she is usually so tuckered out she just goes to sleep :).

She loves my youngest son and he her...she's very observant and very often I catch her just sitting off to the side watching all of us go about our different ways...I think she finds comfort in that. Not that I'm the dog expert...lol...you probably think I'm crazy!!!

But we love her to pieces, she fits in our family, she's our perfect puppy :)

Noah update

Presenting Can & International Champion Doindogs Noah RN(CKC & AKC)

This is an International Championship title- shows are conducted according to European standards and regulations. A dog has to get 3 V1(very excellent rating) to obtain a title . It is interesting because each dog is evaluated according to the standard.

The website is IABCA.com where you can see all the details. Problem is these shows are only held in the US - hopefully they will start holding them in Canada too.

That's my boy :-)

Chief (pic)

Hey Don

Sorry about the wait for a reply, but life can be hectic at times. Chief is an absolute joy and is loved by all, except for maybe the resident cat; she merely tolerates him. Anita and I can't believe we waited so long to get another pup.

Here's a pic from a week or so ago, on the beach in Tracadie. He'll soon be tagging along on some hunts to get used to the sounds and smells, but probably a month or two before any serious training.
We'll be in touch.....

Labrador Alarm clock

Good Morning Don,

Do you remember that I have to take Medicine in the A.M. for my Multiple Sclerosis? It used to be at 6:30, but now I can wait until 7:30. If I am not up already, Sable gets me up. She will put her head down on the bed and look at me. If that does not work, Sable Breathes on me , that usually works. If not, she flaps her ears. That gets me up.

Bill & I got in late last night. I did not get up when the "lab alarm clock" did her thing at 7:30. Bill got up and let het out. She did it again, at 7:45. He fed her, but she kept coming back to me. Bill said" I don't know what's wrong with her, or why she keeps bothering you"… "I do." I said and got up, walked into the dining room and took my pills. Then Sable went back to bed! I said to Bill "see".

I thought I'd let you know that even thought my 'Labrador Alarm clock' has grey on her muzzle and eye brows, and her eyes are getting cloudy..'.it' still rings on time.
Even if someone else hits the "snooze button" she still comes back to get me up.

Ruby went to Hollywood

 Hello Don:

I thought you may want to see some updated pictures of Ruby.  Russell took her and the kids to the Hollywood Hills at Griffith Park, at the top of the hill, on Sundays many Dog Lovers meet and have the dogs play together. Ruby really enjoyed this trip and also swimming at a small pond that is hidden on the hills. I most tell you that she has had a very strong temper, and is very stubborn on what she wants to do, like you mention, she almost had us trained, because training her is being a big challenge. We are working on her basic skills, like stay and don't bite, because she does bite hard a lot of times, she also became the owner of our back yard, so going out to even trow the trash was really hard, but, we are hopping that once she looses the baby teeth, she may do better.(That is what every body tells me) I think she is a great Hunter, more than a city dog, she loves the water, the mud and is already catching some birds, also, she can sniff so fast, that when in the mountains people ask if she is training to be a search dog. Also she looks very beautiful, Russell has make so many new friends, specially "girls" because of the Ruby's charm. Hope you are doing well.
Best Wishes

Lucy

Tucker 1 year

Hi Don

I'm not sure where the time has gone and I'm sorry I haven't been in touch much sooner! I can't believe it has been a year now since I got Tucker from you. We went in today for his annual check up with Dr. Rushton and he was pleased with how Tucker has grown. Tuck did have some digestive issues in the spring, which fortunately just worked itself out. Then the summer came and we were up at our cottage every weekend . . . he loves the beach! He's a great dog & is starting to settle down a bit . . . but still likes to shred things! I have attached a few photos of him (early Spring and couple from this summer). Tell Pierrette that he still has his "wiggle" bum & the wavy line down his back.

Well I hope all is well with you Don. How is Puck doing? Now that Tuck & I are home more, hopefully we can drop by for a visit & you can see how he's grown (70 pounds now).

All the best!
Ann

Drew lost her first tooth

Hi Don,

Drew is 13.5 weeks now, and just lost her first tooth.  She was slightly under 22 pounds when weighed on Wednesday.  She is growing the same wavy hair on her back that Puck had/has.

Thus far things have been going fairly well.  She was struggling to housebreak for the first 4 weeks (she'd pee three times, come in the house, and pee again), and all of her pees were very short, so we figured she had a urinary tract infection.  Antibiotics cleared that up, and she was suddenly accident-free.  It also cleared up a bad case of puppy pimples.

Training is coming along.  "Come" is progressing (high level of distraction isn't there yet), "sit" is pretty solid, "down" is still sketchy.  I use the "hurry" command when she eliminates, but haven't tried to use it yet to get her to go.  I suspect I should spend more time practicing the "kennel" command, but while she would prefer to sleep on a dog bed, she will go to the crate when directed at short range.

We are doing off leash walks, and she's doing quite well staying with me, and can be encouraged to keep going after crossing paths with other dogs and people.  We practice "come" followed by "sit" (which I have found useful in reducing jumping) at these times as well as a general "let's go" to get her to come with me.

Leash work is slow going.  I don't want to overwhelm her attention span, so we only do a little bit at a time.  My puppy leash is apparently not good for snapping, so I've been tucking the leash behind me so that if she scoots forward, the leash catches on my leg to correct her.  The calmer she is, the better the heel.

I did break down, and did a few minutes on fetch, then two days later had her do two retrieves to hand.  We haven't done any since, but it was nice to see that she's going to be good at it.

Drew enjoys the water.  She went from trying to walk along the bottom to swimming horizontally, skipping the upright doggy paddle completely.  I have to keep her moving afterwards, or she gets cold before we get to a towel.

For car trips I still put her in the crate as I worry about her wandering and chewing while I drive.  I don't want to end out with her under the break peddle.  This results is very loud protesting much like her first night in the crate.  Currently I continue to ignore her complaints, but it's wearing.

Here is a picture of Drew at 10 weeks with her future hunting partner, and current chew toy.

Dinner is served.

Maggey is doing awesome!

Hi Don,

It's Laura

Maggey is doing awesome! She is such a good girl! There were a few challenges, lol, But she is amazing! And beautiful!. Thank Mud and Storm for that! She is a bit like her Mom. She has some fears and continues to occasionally develop new ones. We let her figure them out on her own.

I'm working on Blake to adopt another! He's not ready for that yet!
Hope all is well.

Take care! Laura. Xo

Deke's training seems to be coming quick

I think he's going to be steady! That's a little ball of cheese at his feet which he won't touch until I tell him to. He stayed on the sit command for 2 minutes for me tonight. He had his 1st sit lesson 3 days ago!

Coming well now. Heeling is rough as he gets distracted easily and doesn't hold position well sometimes. Sit seems to be working well.
